Day 4

After breakfast today, we packed up and rode the metro to the Capital Area Food Bank to serve for the day.  We met with David, the volunteer coordinator who explained the structure of their program.  He explained that they are the number one food distribution center for shelters in the city of DC as well as Virgina and Maryland.  He reported the distribution center had over 30,000 volunteers help out last year so we felt very fortunate to participate in such a helpful and respectable program. David explained that the distribution center has 31 categories to sort the donated goods into. He instructed us to form small groups and pack the items into boxes that will be distributed to shelters throughout the city. We were all very impressed with how efficient we worked together as a team to fill the task. We work at the shelter from 9 am until 4 pm today, all the while having a great time and sharing lots of laughs and forming good memories with each other. I think it's safe for me to speak for everyone when I say that we all enjoyed our first volunteer experience together. The image that sticks in my mind from today is that the room any other volunteers other than ourselves working with ur own group and we're all working together for a common goal at the end of the day. Looking around the room and seeing all of these people that were giving up their day to help out at the distribution center was really great to see and made me feel very proud to be a part of my ASB team. So far I can't imagine a better way to spend my spring break, thank you to all who made this trip possible :)

  1. This is wonderful to be able to read of your daily activities and events. As I read about the service you are providing the people of the DC area, it is difficult to understand the depth of need that is present in these United States but also comforting to know that these same United States have people of charactor and compassion un-selfishly giving of time, energy and their spring break to help those in need.
It speaks volumes of who you are and how fortunate we are to have people like you surrounding us.
